Welcome to Fish and Trips, an irregular travel newsletter by two newlywed idiots abroad. Over the next six months, we (Sam and Saskia — the Learoyd-Fishwicks) will be winding across North America, Central America and Southeast Asia. We’re on tour. Howdy, buenos días and bonjour. We’ve left our jobs, rented out our London flat and stuck our fingers in our ears as the pound crashed against the dollar — as of November 9, we’re out of office.

Why subscribe?

We hope friends and family will want to follow along and be assured we’re still alive. Which we will be. We think. This will be our first time stepping foot anywhere in the US beyond New York. It will also be my first time driving. Wish us luck. What’s more, if anyone reading has any suggestions of spots to stop in at, sights to see, people to say hi to — let us know! We have an accompanying Instagram, @Fish_and_trips_abroad. Thanks to brother Joe for the name of the newsletter during pre-departure brainstorming: aside from the obvious pun, Sam is known exclusively as Fish among friends, and Saskia is known for tripping over. It suits us to a tee.

Stay up-to-date

In our first month, we’ll be travelling across the US from East to West coast, New York to Los Angeles, taking a Southern-ish route in a converted Ford E-150 camper van — Wilson, to its friends — that we’ve rented until 10 December. We expect to be all over the place, geographically and emotionally. There will be big cities, bargain BNBs, the best food we can cram into our stomachs on a budget. There will be open roads, tiny towns, wooded mountains, and desert plains. There will be backpacks. Will we make friends? Will anyone invite us to Thanksgiving? As we scramble south while wrestling with intermittent phone service, WiFi archipelagos and the need to nap, please stay with us and keep in touch.
